The practice

Poppy Room is a lighting, shading and controls design practice based in Los Altos, California. We design architectural lighting, shading, and integration with control systems and smart home systems.

We decide the placement and fixture layout for every room in a home, to put light where it is needed and to avoid glare, harsh reflections and hard shadows. We choose shading that works with the lighting, so daylight is used well and the sun does not cause glare. We design scenes where the lighting and the shading work together at the press of a single button.

We work with architects on fixture selection and layouts, and on planning for shading hardware including window header mounts, wall face mounts and recessed ceiling mounts. We work with integrators to program control and home automation systems. We optimize fixture layouts around how people will live in the home, rather than around fixed patterns.

We work on new builds and remodels, and we are equally comfortable with smaller scopes such as a kitchen or a bathroom. We work at every level of design and fixture budget, from basic store-bought fixtures through to fully tunable custom luminaires.
